Pup Training and Baths

Pup Training and Baths

The Reedhive gained a new pup recently, and we realized how out of practice we got with training as our pack aged. Ada Peach, a 6ish month old probable German Shorthair Pointer mix, is an incredible pup by nature, and we're using lots of tried and true methods to teach her the ways of life here. She'll also hopefully be starting K9 search and rescue training alongside Adam in the coming months. It's all exciting, and we're trying to help her grow into a strong, confident, well mannered lady.

Positive reinforcement training is one of the most effective ways to build a confident, well behaved dog. This approach rewards the behaviors you want to see more of, creating a strong bond between you and your pet while making learning enjoyable. The key is timing—reward your dog immediately when they do something right so they understand exactly which behavior earned the praise, treat, or playtime.

Bathing is an often-overlooked opportunity to reinforce positive behaviors. When you introduce bath time with a calm, rewarding approach, you're teaching your dog that being handled and groomed is a good thing. This foundation makes future vet visits, nail trims, and grooming tasks much easier. Start slowly with anxious dogs, use warm water, speak encouragingly, and reward them throughout the process. Each small step forward deserves recognition.

The right grooming products make all the difference in keeping bath time positive. Natural dog products like Shampoochie® Dog Soap are formulated without harsh chemicals, making them gentler on your dog's skin and coat. Handmade dog products crafted with care ensure quality and safety, while plant-based formulas reduce scrubbing time and stress. When bathing is quick and comfortable, your dog is far more likely to cooperate willingly next time.

Natural dog grooming practices complement positive reinforcement training perfectly. By using gentle, handmade dog shampoos and maintaining a calm approach, you're teaching your dog that grooming is a safe, rewarding part of their routine. Dogs that experience positive grooming with quality natural products become more cooperative and confident during handling.

Consistency is essential in both training and grooming. Use the same commands and rewards across your household, and establish regular bathing routines so your dog knows what to expect. By combining positive reinforcement training with thoughtful natural dog care and quality handmade products, you're building a happy, well-adjusted dog with a healthy coat and confident demeanor.
